  • WordPress.org – the self-hosted version of WordPress that powers up the 35% of the internet world from hobby sites to news outlets and everything in between
  • BlueHost – most commonly used hosting site that is compatible with WordPress
  • How To Start A Blog – a step by step guide that we created here in The Nursing Bloc on how you can start creating your own blog today

Entrepreneurship

  • The Nursing Bloc – our website that we created to help you in your quest to become a nurse entrepreneur. This is were nursing meets business and entrepreneurship.
  • National Nurses in Business Association – A professional nursing organization for nurses transitioning from traditional nursing to business.
  • Entrepreneur.com – Home of the Entrepreneur magazine and this site contains articles, guides, and advice for established and aspiring entrepreneurs worldwide

Legal

  • Legalzoom – a site where you can file anything legal, such as filing for a business LLC, etc.
  • SBA.gov – US Small Business Association official website, filled with resources especially for small businesses
  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office – federal agency for granting US patents and registering trademarks. You can use this to look up any patents, trademarks, or you can apply for your own.
  • Copyright.gov – official website of the US Copyright Office where you can search for copyrights, and file for your own
  • Creative Commons (CC)– a global non-profit organization that enables sharing and reuse of creativity and knowledge through the provision of free legal tools to help those who want to encourage reuse of their works by offering them for use under generous, standardized terms; those who want to make creative uses of works; and those who want to benefit from the CC symbiosis.

Marketing

  • Mailchimp – mailing list builder that is free for up to 2000 subscribers and prices go up from there depending on which tier plan you select
  • Social media – see below for our list of recommended social media sites to use to promote you and your brand
  • Keywords Everywhere – Chrome and Firefox add-on that can show you monthly search volume, cost per click and competition data of keywords on multiple websites
  • VidIQ – YouTube resource helps video creators get more views and subscribers in less time, gives info on video stats, etc. Has a free basic option with limited features, and also has higher level plans with more features
  • TubeBuddy – rated #1 YouTube optimization and management toolkit

Media

  • Canva – free, online photo editing software
  • Pixabay – a free source of stock photos

Social Media Tools

  • Facebook – a social media site where you can connect with others be part of communities via groups and pages
  • Instagram – a mobile site where you can upload and share images and short videos with your followers
  • LinkedIn – a resume social network where you can network with other professionals
  • Pinterest – a picture site where you can pin images from other Pinterest users
  • TikTok – a free mobile app to create short 15-60 second videos and share with your followers
  • Twitter – a platform where you can post messages up to 280 characters long
  • YouTube – a free, online video sharing platform that has a global reach of more than 2 billion users

Tech Tools

Video Editing
  • Camtasia – a Windows and Mac OS compatible software from TechSmith that can record your screen and you can try this software with their free 30 day trial before purchasing it
  • OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software) – a free, open source video editing and screen casting software compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Linux OS
  • iMovie – free video editing software for Apple MacOS
  • Final Cut Pro – paid video editing software for Apple MacOS and Windows that you can trial for 90 days, and is more robust and has more features compared to iMovie
  • Adobe Premiere Pro – a paid video editing software made by Adobe that is both compatible for Windows and MacOS and has a free 7 day trial
  • Vegas Pro – a paid video editing software for Windows and has a free 30 day trial period
Audio Editing
  • Audacity – a free, open sourced software that is used to record audio and is compatible with Windows, MacOS, and Linux OS
  • Garage Band – a free audio editing software for Apple MacOS and can be used with a Mac desktop/laptop, iPad or iPhone.
  • Adobe Audition – a paid audio editing software made by Adobe and has a free 7 day trial period before it becomes a paid subscription, and it is compatible for both Windows and MacOS

Tech Gear

  • Computer laptop and desktop – Mac vs Windows – these all depend on what you prefer to use or what you have currently available. For minimum specs, here is what you’ll need to look for when buying a computer (specs are minimum for video editing but is a good guide for other uses as well)
    • Memory/RAM: 8-32 GB RAM or as much as you can afford (the ideal is at least 16GB)
    • Processor: Multi-core Inter i5/i7/i9 (i9 is the best one) and preferably four or more processor cores
    • Storage: Have at least 256GB hard drive, 7200 RPM, preferable SSD (fastest). Buy as much as you can afford. You can always add external hard drives.
    • Graphics card: Depends on the editing software you will use for video and audio.
    • Operating system: Windows 7 (64 bit edition), Mac OS X, Linux
    • Good sized screen – 19 – 21 inch the best (16 in minimum)
    • Firewire or Thunderbolt Port (for Apple): built in or as an external dock
  • Smartphone – whether it’s an Apple iPhone or an Android device like Samsung, smartphones nowadays have features like it’s built in camera and there are free and paid apps that you can use to create content
  • Camera – highly recommend to start off with your smartphone if you have one, and you can eventually graduate to DSLR cameras
